Liberia Office of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) has released the 2017 junior and senior high school results, with female students performing better than their male counterparts.

The result shows that 58 percent of grade 9 and 59 percent of 12 grade students received passing marks as compared to 61 to 41 percent respectively in 2016.It also shows the strong performance of students in Sinoe and Grand Bassa counties, thereby constituting to 88 and 79 percent out of the total number of students who registered and sat the examinationsIn May of this year, over 10,000 students across the nation sat the exams but unlike the previous academic year, the just ended examination results revealed that there has been great improvement in students’ performance.According to the results, 180 high schools received 100 percent 12th grade 12th students that passed across the nation, with a 12th grade student Markling Weagbah of Calvary Mission High School in Paynesville, Montserrado County receiving the highest score in the senior certificate exams with 16 candidates obtaining division two results.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has welcomed the improvement in the junior and senior high school WAEC examination results. The Ministry of Education and WAEC used the occasion to commend students and teachers across the country for their good work in preparing for the exams. They cited that the result demonstrate the preparedness of Liberian students and effort by educators in ensuring a well deserving future for Liberia.Commenting on the results, Education Minister George Werner said the pass marks of 9th and 12th grade students are all evidence that the strategy he implemented under the ministry’s 30 plans are working. He noted that the result is a gateway to the many transformation taking place or that will take place in the system. In the past two academic years, Liberian students poorly preformed in WAEC exams due to either fear, lack of instructional materials or students inability to study their lessons amongst other reasons. For example, the 2016 examinations witnessed mass failure due to the cancellation in the date of the exams for the senior high school students.Officials of WACE Liberia Chapter linked the mass failure to misinformation on the part of the media coupled with the students’ inability to prepare ahead of the exams.
